The rundown on IPL Hair Removal

IPL hair removal

What’s IPL – is it different to Laser and VPL?

At Skinsmiths we use advanced IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), which passes a broad-spectrum light through the hair and is absorbed by the pigment (colour) of the hair follicle. This absorption process produces heat, which travels down the hair destroying the follicle, along with its ability to regenerate. Hundreds of hair follicles can be destroyed with each pulse, resulting in an easy and effective way to treat unwanted hair.

While there are technical differences between IPL, VPL and Laser, for the sake of simplicity, we often use the term “laser” for them all.

Why choose Skinsmiths for laser hair removal?

We undergo rigorous training before we perform laser hair removal and strict procedures and protocols are adhered to.

How does it work?

The laser light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the colour in the hair. This generates heat within the hair follicle, loosening the hair and disabling it. The hair can only be removed when in the active growth stage. Generally, between 6-8 sessions are required.

Who can be treated?

Blonde, red and grey hairs are more difficult to remove and not all skin types are suitable. We use the Fitzpatrick skin type assessment and do a patch test to decide if you are eligible for this treatment.

Where can I have it?

  • Bikini / Brazilian / Hollywood

  • Face

  • Underarms

  • Back

  • Chest

  • Arms

  • Legs

What does it feel like?

Different people feel the laser in different ways. For some, there is a feeling of heat, others feel a slight sting, and some say the sensation is like the flick of a rubber band. Many people agree that laser is preferable to waxing!

What results can I expect?

You should start to see a difference after your third or fourth treatment. It is impossible to remove 100% of unwanted hair, due to the hormonal nature of hair growth. Individual results will vary, we aim for up to an 80% reduction.
