What your food habits are doing to your skin

Food

Heard the saying “you are what you eat”? Well that can certainly apply to your skin. Our diet plays a huge role in our skins health and eating certain foods can wreak havoc on our skin. Are you guilty of any of these?

Excess sugar: Excess sugar weakens the immune system, making it more difficult to fight off bacteria which can cause acne and other skin inflammatory conditions, including skin congestion. So if you’re after clearer, blemish free skin, try reducing your sugar intake and opt for naturally sweet alternatives such as fresh fruit.

Watch the booze: Excessive alcohol consumption can have various negative impacts on your skin. It can cause loss of collagen, leading to premature wrinkles, loss of facial volume and dehydration. To lessen the damage alcohol could be doing to your skin, try only drinking on special occasions or choose drinks with a lower alcohol percentage such as beer or white wine spritzers.

Hold the spice: If you’re prone to redness or rosacea, it may be best to give that spicy curry a miss. Foods with spices such as chilli, cayenne or red peppers can often produce flushing by releasing histamine. If you suffer from redness, you may want to watch the temperature of foods you eat too. Very hot food can cause flushing by activating receptors in the back of your throat.

Excess amounts of dairy: Although dairy helps provide us with calcium, it isn't always the most helpful for our skin. Dairy products are pro-inflammatory, which can worsen acne and accelerate ageing. So instead of relying solely on dairy for your calcium needs, try getting it from other foods such as dark leafy vegetables or tofu.
